Shipbuilding Market India - VDMA Web Seminar

VDMA member companies presented to the Indian maritime industry

India currently has 28 maritime shipyards, of which six belong to the central public sector, two to the states and 20 to the private sector. India has proven its capability in shipbuilding in the past and has delivered high quality ships in numerous examples.

In India too, the future of shipbuilding is expected to be driven by green technologies, autonomous ships and cost effective technologies. This also presents a great opportunity to expand short sea shipping in the country.

To shed more light on the opportunities for collaboration in the shipbuilding industry, VDMA India hosted an international web seminar on "Indian Maritime Industry: Technology Solutions from Germany" on Wednesday, August 11, 2021. The event focused on technical presentations by VDMA members ePLAN, Lechler, Phoenix Contact, Ortlinghaus and GEA Westphalia, complemented by the keynote address by VDMA Marine Equipment and Systems on current trends in this leading German supplier industry.

Around 130 people from India and Germany participated in the web seminar.

To start with, Mr. Rajesh Nath, Managing Director VDMA India, highlighted the importance of maritime industry as the "backbone of India" with some statistics. He added, "The Indian shipbuilding industry is of strategic importance to the Indian economy and can contribute immensely to the vision of making India a $5 trillion economy by 2024. The Indian government has set ambitious plans for the country's shipbuilding and ship repair industry. However, the industry can only flourish if reliable technologies are available and can be deployed. Therefore, today our member companies will highlight how German technology support can advance the Indian shipbuilding and marine industry."

Due to the good response, further events in this digital format are planned to maintain and expand contact with the Indian maritime industry despite travel restrictions.
