Interaction with Kolkata Port Trust
In pursuit of our strengthening relationship with the port sector in the eastern region, VDMA India organized an interactive session with Mr. S. Balaji Arunkumar IRTS, Dy. Chairman, Kolkata Port Trust on Thursday, 13th February 2020. Dr. Michael Feiner, Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Kolkata also joined the meeting.
Kolkata Port is the oldest and the only riverine Major Port in India, situated 232 kms. up-stream from the Sandheads, having arguably the longest navigational channel amongst major ports of India and its navigational channel is one of the longest in the world. The Port has two distinct dock systems - Kolkata Docks at Kolkata and a deep water dock at Haldia Dock Complex, Haldia. As of March 2018, the port is capable of processing annually 650,000 containers, mostly from Nepal, Bhutan, and India's northeastern states.
On 12 January 2020, the Kolkata port was renamed to Syama Prasad Mukherjee Port by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on occasion of 150 years of operation of Kolkata Port, during his recent visit to West Bengal.
From the VDMA member’s side, Thyssenkrupp, Kaercher, Nord and Ringspann joined the meeting. The meeting was moderated by Mr. Ajmal Fawad, Deputy Manager, VDMA India, accompanied by Mr. Sandip Roy, Regional Head (East), VDMA India.
