"The industrial middle class must be better reached"

Up to now, larger medium-sized companies have been clearly disadvantaged in the promotion of research. It is good that the Ministry of Research now wants to make improvements here.

Hartmut Rauen, Deputy Managing Director of the VDMA, explains the "activation programme" of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, which provides for an expansion of tax-based research funding:

"Better late than never. The fiscal research promotion must reach the industrial middle class much better. Because even in the past, larger medium-sized companies, so-called mid-range companies, have been clearly disadvantaged in research funding. Even the new instrument of tax-based research promotion leaves a large share of their research expenditure outside the scope of the new system.

"Even with the new instrument of fiscal research promotion, a high proportion of your research expenditure is left out.

It is good that the Research Ministry wants to make improvements here - even if a larger step would be even better in terms of innovation in medium-sized industrial companies. But that is only one side of the coin. After all, tax incentives for research only have a positive effect on liquidity when the tax is set in the following year. The other side is therefore to ensure that it takes effect more quickly. Then the tax research promotion can make a sustainable contribution to securing the future of our location.
